RE: RV Wholesalers vs the local guy

Oh yeah ... RV DIRECT also filled the 30 pound gas bottles ... AND installed a FREE deep cycle battery in my Jayco as part of their delivery process.

RE: RV Wholesalers vs the local guy

rv dealer mark1228>>you are paying for PDI anyway Mark, I've bought four rigs and have never paid for a PDI. Of course, my local Jayco dealer tried to charge me $1,600 for "dealer prep" in his quote so I suppose you'd say part of that was his PDI. $1,600 dealer prep ... plus $800 quote for shipping from Indiana to Illinois. $2,400 "pack" in his quote. Do you know how much RV Direct charged me? $0 dealer prep $0 shipping if I picked it up at their full-service dealership, Des Moines (Iowa) RV. So, before we even talked price ... RV Direct was $2,400 less. Since you say you are the general manager of an RV Dealership ... you might instruct your salesmen that perhaps a first-time buyer would pay a $1,600 dealer prep "pack", not knowing any better ... but tell your sales force not to chase a seasoned customer out the door with such nonsense.

RE: RV Wholesalers vs the local guy

a.k.hillbilly>when you bought from RV direct, did they barter The way it worked for me ... there was no bartering. I filled out a form online with the various options ... submitted it ... they responded minutes later with an email, asking that I call a salesperson, Rebecca ... who immediately after calling her, emailed me a price quote. It was so much lower than the two area Jayco dealers that I never thought to barter. I was more than happy with the price. The whole process, from pricing to delivery, was the smoothest, no hassle, no buyer's remorse process I've ever experienced.

RE: If Price Didn't Matter, What Trailer Would You Buy?

I'd keep my current Jayco and buy several isolated, private pieces of property for campsites ... a couple of mountaintop wilderness ones, a few lakeside lots, and an oceanfront or two (although difficult to get isolated oceanfront these days)(maybe somewhere in Nova Scotia).

RE: If you can climb onto your roof ...

>>steps Obviously hiking isn't one of my strong points ... and to "climb the rock" involves steps ... as do most of the trails around the lodge that go down to the river ... but on the far east side of the park, there is one trail that goes back into Illinois Canyon that is fairly level and wide enough for a chair, until you hit a creek. We also like to hang out away from the crowd in the Lone Point Shelter area. http://dnr.state.il.us/LANDS/landmgt/parks/sitemaps/starved.pdf The campground is fairly large ... with two paved loops ... plenty of room to roll (after you clear the speed bumps!) Except for the big weekends (memorial day, 4th july, labor day, Columbia Day and a thing called the Burgoo Festival), you'll have no problem getting a handicapped spot. And even on the big weekends, there's usually a few hc spots open till just after dark. And of course, weekdays are wide open.

RE: You can never go home again

I retired long ago ... and miss the everyday interaction with folks too. But, for everything, there is a season. And now is the time for my wife and I to RV into the future. We can ... and do ... make new friends along the way.

RE: GPS Coordinates of Blood Banks that buy blood

Congrats on your 250 pint pin! I'm jealous. But back in college ... I was broke ... needed beer money ... and selling blood helped fund my extra curricular activities. Funny thing about it ... after filling up my fuel tank, I find myself in the same position, broke ... need more gas money ... and wish I could find an easy way to fun my extra curricular RV'ing activities (easy as in lay on a cot and let folks pay me to take my blood.) Ha!

RE: Digital to Analog TV Converter in RV --- Wow!

Dave ... I agree there is a lot of confusion, but it's my understanding that cable companies will convert and carry an analog signal of basic and expanded cable channels so that subscribers will NOT need a conversion box. Now, you will continue to need an "addressable" box or card to receive cable premium channels, on demand, and ppv. It could be that it is an "optional" thing amongst the various cable companies ... but I guess we'll all find out early next year when the deadline comes (provided it isn't extended, which there's talk it might) But anyway, let's get back on topic ... which is, wow, I've never seen such a nice picture inside my rv on my black and white tv! And I encourage folks to apply for the coupons so they can continue to use analog tv's in their rigs into the future. Be a shame for folks to throw away a working tv. Also, I hear that Goodwill and other places are being flooded with analog tv's ... which with one of these conversion boxes, could be usable for years to come.

RE: If you can climb onto your roof ...

>>Illinois P2A disability card No, this is not the same thing as a handicapped parking tag (which almost anyone can get with a hangnail.) A P2A disability card is a state certified identity card ... and the P2A rating is the most profound physical disability rating, allowing access to many State services and other benefits. There are several other ratings, which don't carrying the same weight. Interestingly enough, if you google Illinois P2A, you'll find that most of the hits are information about handicapped hunting and the lengths the state goes to make sure profoundly physically disabled hunter can enjoy the sport.

RE: If you can climb onto your roof ...

Hi Larry ... Hey, some time run up to Starved Rock State Park ... it along with several other state parks hold ALL handicapped spots open for folks with a P2A disability card and/or disabled vets. You can almost always get a disabled spot there. The handicapped spots are held open until just after dark ...they then allow other campers to occupy them ... but they have to vacate the spots by 10 the next morning ... so the spots will be open for disabled vets or P2A disability holders. Other state parks allow anybody with a sore knee to occupy the spots ... so it's kind of hit or miss. Glad you are enjoying the post ... and you are the reason I avoid occupying the spots. I want to make sure you will always have a spot to go camping! Thanks for your service. See you out camping!

RE: Help with Overweight Camper

>>what is your pin weight Ha! Another thing to weigh when I get around a Cat scale! It certainly isn't very much ... and my 2500HD frame is more than capable of handling it.

RE: 1st camp trip with the granddaughter

Don't forget the marshmallows, chocolate bars and graham crackers to make sm-mors (spelling) ... you know, roast the marshmallows, mash them on a cracker with some chocolate. Jeese, making myself hungry here.

RE: GPS Coordinates of Blood Banks that buy blood

>>$10 in college I think it was that much for me, too, Leonard. And it seemed like a lot of money. Obviously I'm joking about selling it ... but I can't even donate blood due a prior blood infection I had about 20 years ago. So maybe I should change the premise of my opening line to asking for GPS coordinates for places to sell a kidney ... to afford gas. One station near us changed prices three times today. Good Grief

RE: Digital to Analog TV Converter in RV --- Wow!

Thanks for posting the link, Les. To those of you applying, you need to answer that "no" you don't have cable to your house to qualify for the $40 coupons ... and we don't ... to our RV houses. It would have to be a pretty long cable to keep up with us.

RE: If you can climb onto your roof ...

Serena>>got bennies he did not need or qualify for at that time, had he been honest. .... tried to collect and withhold from his children Sounds like a dishonest bum. But let me repeat my premise ... when it comes to handicapped camping or handicapped parking ... I don't care whether you are Christopher Reeves (ok, before he died) or some disability con artist ... you and I owe it to those disabled folks who might be pulling in behind us and need the spot more to KEEP THOSE SPOTS OPEN if we have the ability to camp and park elsewhere. Unfortunately, the spots are usually occupied by folks who .... well, you know ... there's no need for me to repeat myself. I think we've about beat this issue to death. And I think we all agree ... in principal ... but have to iron out some small differences.

RE: If you can climb onto your roof ...

>>Oregon has passed a new law that restricts a portion of the van accessible parking spots to people who have a special "Wheelchair User" disabled parking permit I understand and could support that law. >>It also requires free parking on meters only to people with the "Wheelchair User" permit but allows municipalities to charge other regular disabled parking permit holders for accessible parking. I would be protesting this. It would be harder for someone with congestive heart or lung problems to trot back to their meters than many folks who can "roll." Meters should be free for all or free for none.

RE: RV Wholesalers vs the local guy

ao_hitech>>how do you handle pdi with them I assume by "them," you mean out of state dealers and/or RV Direct and RV Wholesaler ... I can only speak for RV DIRECT. RV DIRECT had me pay in full when my Jayco was "off-line" at the factory. I admit that was a slight "leap of faith." But it was my fourth rv ... and to be honest with you, I felt pretty sure there wasn't much I couldn't fix myself, aside from a major slide-out problem, if the need should arise. I did get a thorough PDI at RD DIRECT's Des Moines (IOWA) RV dealership. They had prepped the trailer ... and I could find nothing wrong with it ... and still have not found a problem with my Jayco. I also felt with Jayco's two year bumper-to-bumper warranty, I'd have plenty of time to iron out any issues, should they arise. I'd tell you more about how smoothly my PDI and delivery went with RV DIRECT, but somebody would then jump me for being an RV DIRECT plant.

RE: If you can climb onto your roof ...

TOM>> we use the bathroom in the RV Hi Tom! We do too! In fact, I often tell folks I'm more comfortable "inside" my rv than I am in my house ... because I'm only a few steps from the bed, bath and kitchen... with no steps ... and only an arm's length away from my wife and dog! Hey, some relatives, the Mohn's, are from New Bern. We've been there several times, boating on the river. Really pretty area.

RE: Jayco Shirts

Bill ... I love my Jayco Jay Flight. I'm a big Jayco fan. Can you ask for a shirt for me? But, I'm just a bit nervous that Jayco was able to find out your phone number from your profile of just "Bill B800si" in SE Michigan. How did they find your phone number ... call all the Bill B's in SW Michigan in their registration records? NOTE TO JAYCO ... I'm Charles W in Central Illinois. I'm in your registration files. Please send XL! HA! I'm joking. And I'm happy Jayco is monitoring the site. It shows they care ... but I never doubted that.
